why do diet books say to consult a doctor before changing your eating and exercise habits?
Do I really need to talk to a doctor before cutting down on cheeseburgers and taking a walk at the park occasionally

Nah, its more for people who are 100′s of pounds overweight.
it’s so they don’t over do it and get like clots or some kind of injury.
These are for people who are doing extreme weight loss plans and those who are very obese. And also for those who are not fit to be on a diet or weight loss plan.
Those doing the extreme way of diet should consult a doctor because sometimes their bodies just can’t stand the sudden change in daily activity or food intake. For example, like someone who never exercises and suddenly exercises like he/she’s training for the Olympics, their body can go into shock. That’s why they should consult a doctor.
Those who are very obese usually has a lot of health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. So they should consult their doctor before starting any diet plans and ask for advice.
And also, some people are just not fit to go on a diet because sometimes they are light enough already or has some medical conditions. Those people can follow what the book says and if anything goes wrong, they can blame the book. But since the book says consult a doctor, if anything goes wrong, it’s not the book’s fault but the person himself because they didn’t ask a doctor if they were fit to go on a diet.
As for you, you don’t have the need to consult a doctor for just cutting down on a little food and just exercising a little bit more often. The doctor will probably give you a face, and like "And you’re telling me this because…?"
So no need.
Diet books ask people to talk to a doctor because some people have health restrictions. For instance, cutting out a certain protein would hurt them, or eating a certain vitamin may harm them. Or maybe they have a heart condition that prohibits them from cardio workouts.
But as for your plan, you don’t need to consult a doctor before that. That’s just living a healthy lifestyle. It’s different than totally changing your life. You’re fine.
They are protecting themselves from lawsuits. The reader may have a health issue, and that particular diet/exercise may be harmful. For a normal person, with no medical problems, there is no need to consult a doctor before eating healthier and exercising.
